Melvin F. Smith, 85, of Bath, was stricken at home and passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, September 11, 2025, at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Muhlenberg in Bethlehem. He was the loving husband of Patricia D. (Schleicher) Smith. They couple would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on October 17.
Born in Upper Nazareth Township, Mel was a son of the late William A. and Theresa F. (Pflugler) Smith. He was a graduate of Northampton High School, class of 1958, and Bethlehem Business School. Mel also honorably served in the National Guard. A proud and successful career which spanned more than 30 years at the former Bethlehem Steel Corp., Mel retired as a systems analyst/manager in the Information Services Department. Previously, he was employed at the former New Jersey Zinc Co. in Palmerton. Mel was an ardent New York Yankee and Penn State fan, and a true sportsman at heart. He participated for 40 years in fastpitch softball leagues, enjoyed trout fishing with his grandson, muzzleloader hunting, and loved the game of golf accomplishing the most elusive goal of a hole-in-one at Golden Oaks Golf Club. Mel was also a man of great faith and an active member of Salem United Church of Christ of Moorestown, where he unselfishly devoted his time to serving in many capacities throughout his lifetime.
