It wasn't the dramatic ending he once joked about - "in a hail of bullets from the top of the stairs"-but Edgar F. Haynes, 80, passed away on August 11 from injuries sustained in a solitary bicycle accident in Easton, PA.

Athletics, resilience, a no-nonsense approach to life, and deep dedication to family defined Haynes, who lived in Nazareth, PA.

Born in Peoria, Illinois, Haynes made his mark early as a standout athlete at Woodruff High School. He went on to play semi-professional football in Normal, IL, and later ran marathons alongside family members-his competitive spirit never far from the surface.

Professionally, Haynes devoted much of his life to law enforcement. He served with the Peoria Police Department, the Warren Country Criminal Case Management, the Pennsylvania Parole Board, and the U.S. Marshals Service. His dedication, experience, and physical fitness allowed him to delay the Marshals' mandatory retirement age of 57-he finally stepped down at 63, and retired as a Parole Agent at the age of 70.

Haynes graduated from Illinois State University. He volunteered for the U.S. Army, serving in the Military Police from 1966 to 1969. His service was primarily based in Germany.

Haynes also had a lifelong passion for baseball, particularly the St. Louis Cardinals. It wouldn't have been a stretch to picture him suited up in a classic flannel uniform with "Cardinals" in red script and the iconic birds-on-a-bat logo. He was known for spouting stats, suggesting trades, evaluating rookies, and bold predictions about the season ahead.

He is survived by his son, Brett S. Haynes of Saylorsburg, PA; stepson, Ryan Gallagher of Nazareth, PA; stepdaughter, Maura Macomber of Tewksbury, MA; and his sister, Suzanne Reed of Reno, NV.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary F. (Haynes) Ketay; his father, Edgar F. Haynes; and his stepfather, Dr. Joseph M. Ketay.
