A. Frank Sterne, III, 98, of Washington, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Advanced Health Care of Hanover, Hanover Twp., PA. He was the beloved husband of Nina Sterne (Shevchuk) to whom he was married for 71 years. Born in Wilkes Barre, Frank was a son of the late Abram and Myrtle Sterne (Betterly).
He attended MIT, He worked as a plant manager at Manhattan Rubber - Passaic NJ, later he owned Radient Energy Systems, which designed and developed infrared technology.
He was a proud member of the Army Air Force. He first enlisted in June 1945, before the end of World War II, and later re-enlisted in October 1945, serving in Occupied Germany. During his initial service, he was stationed at Camp Gordon, where troops had been held in reserve for the planned invasion of Japan-an operation that became unnecessary following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Frank was honorable discharged in May 1948.
An avid reader, Frank had a curious mind that propelled him to explore the world through books and travel. His fondness for Europe brought him joy, enriching his life with diverse cultures and experiences. Additionally, Frank had a love for stained glass, taking pride in creating beautiful pieces that were cherished by his family and friends.
An enthusiastic private pilot, Frank owned his own airplane, and his passion for flying was only rivaled by his love for motorcycles. Remarkably, he took up riding again when he turned 80, embodying the spirit of adventure that defined his life. He was also known for his talents in leatherwork and screen printing, showcasing his creative spirit and passion for hands-on artistry.
In addition to his wife; He will be dearly missed by his children: Linda Gasparini (George) of Inverness, FL, Melissa Hagemann (Phil) of Phillipsburg, NJ, G. Michael Sterne (Marilyn) of Eugene, OR and Andy Sterne (Andree) of Seattle, WA; grandchildren: Lorenzo, Giuliana, Cory, Melinda and Armando; 2 great-grandchildren.
As per Frank's wishes, no formal services will be held. Burial of cremated remains will take place privately at the convenience of the family.
